At the Muslim Sports Foundation, we believe that mental health is as essential as physical health—and that culturally sensitive support is the key to unlocking both. That’s why, in partnership with Mind, we conducted a nationwide survey to explore the mental health experiences of British Muslims.
Why We Launched This Survey
Mental health is a topic that still struggles for space within British Muslim communities, however, our survey received over 1,200 respondents.. Too many of us suffer in silence, are unsure where to turn, misunderstood, or ashamed to seek help.
Our collaboration with Mind was designed to:
- Understand the specific mental health challenges British Muslims face.
- Raise awareness and reduce stigma within our communities.
- Create more accessible, culturally informed support systems.
- Promote physical activity as a powerful tool for mental health.
What the Community Told Us
The findings highlight both a pressing need and a powerful opportunity:
- 78% said mental health is still a taboo in their community.
- Only 5.6% turned to therapy or counselling when overwhelmed.
- 41% coped by praying, and 27% leaned on family and friends.
- 91% recognised the benefits of physical activity for their mental health, yet 46% reported being “less active” (less than 30 minutes of physical activity per week).
- Just 8% knew if their mosque offered any mental health support.
Encouragingly, 62% believe Islam supports seeking mental health care—a foundation we can build upon.
What Comes Next
This June, we’ll be launching our Mindful Sunnah Handbook, which connects faith, physical activity, and mental health. In July, we’ll join mosques across the UK for a national Friday sermon campaign focused on how sport and movement support mental health and spiritual strength.
Our Message to the Community
Mental health is not weakness—it’s part of being human. And seeking help is not against our faith; it’s in harmony with it.
This survey is just the beginning. Together—with your voices, your stories, and your support—we will build a community that is strong in both mind and body.
We are looking forward to working with Mind moving forwards
Let’s move forward, together.
